What is your favorite hobby or pastime?
“Sayang, I don’t understand why should you take pictures all the time!”, my hubby asked me that day when I tried to capture the sunset in Bali using my camera.
That was such an interesting question. I reflected back and asked myself why do I enjoy capturing moments so much.
There is a quote that I love, “Sometimes, you never really know the true worth of a moment until it is become a memory or a photograph.”
Maybe this is the reason why I love to write special moments in my diary or capture pictures through my camera. I just wanted to freeze that moment, then re-read or re-watch them as I move on to a different chapter of my life.
I experienced lost, disappointment, happiness, love, and so on. I also moved to different phases in life that changed my whole perspective. I saw different faces, hear different languages, smell different scent, feel different textures, ah… a lot, and they shaped me into the person I am right now.
Writing and taking pictures have helped me to revisit the old memories in a way that otherwise impossible.
Besides, it taught me that the reality my mind constructed wasn’t as accurate as I had thought for so many years. For example, sometimes I find myself resenting some people in the past that have wounded my inner child. However, by seeing the old pictures or re-reading my old diaries I remember that my childhood was actually not that bad and those people are not as mean as I pictured them in my thought.
Yes, there were some tears, disappointment, hatred, distressed, but I also received an exceeding amount of love, laughter, compassion, and all positive energy as well.
The writings in my diaries and pictures I collected have been helping me to heal from my childhood trauma.
Currently, I enjoy collecting our core memories with Baby D through diaries and pictures. I hope she would look back at these stories and pictures and realized that she is also loved and cherished.
